Temple of Aphrodite of Tamassos

The temple of Aphrodite of Tamassos is found in the homonymous archaeological site located in village Politiko of Nicosia's in Cyprus.

Moreover, besides the temple of Aphrodite of Tamassos, two homonymous royal tombs, as well as several smaller ones, have been excavated in the same area.

Apart from the ancient kingdom of Amathus, the religious worship of Aphrodite flourished in Tamassos, as evidenced by the excavation of an altar of limestone. At the same time, the archaeological excavation brought to light various vases, incense, and lamps, which also related in some way to the goddess’s worship. For example, sculptures of pigeons (the sacred birds of Aphrodite) were excavated.

It is believed that both the Temple of Aphrodite of Tamassos and the altar excavated are monuments of the second Archaic period (600-475 BC), which were destroyed around the beginning of the 5th century but were reconstructed during the Hellenistic period .

Finally, the space is open all year round and is also accessible to people with disabilities.
