Shipwreck EDRO III

Shipwreck EDRO III adds one more reason to visit Cyprus. It is located 16 kilometers north of Paphos, off the beach Sea Caves Pegeias in Paphos province, between the Coral Bay and Agios Georgios Pegeias.

Among the most beautiful diving destinations, the shipwreck EDRO III, property of an Albanian ship owner with a Sierra Leone flag, was a cargo ship with a length of 84 meters, width of 14 meters and weight of 2517 tones. It was stranded near the islet Geronisos due to the very bad weather conditions on 8 December of 2011.

The ship left the port of Limassol loaded with plasterboard, heading to Rhodes, but due to heavy winds and a mechanical failure, it was forced to come out into the shallows and it got stuck on the rocks about 10 meters from the shore. The 9-member crew of the ship from Lebanon, Albania and Egypt, was rescued by a helicopter of the British bases. The reaction by the Cypriot state was prompt and timely eliminated the possibility of pollution in the area, as petroleum residues, the batteries and everything that could pollute the sea was removed.

The area of the shipwreck EDRO III, which is included in the Natura 2000 program, is visited by thousands of travellers each year to admire the magnificent scenery and photograph the impressive spectacle. Very close to this wreck there is another abandoned ship, wreck Dimitrios II which is an important landmark for the guests of Chlorakas.
