River Liopetri
The Liopetri River is a landscape of unique beauty for Cyprus, located in the Famagusta province, about 15 kilometers from the center of Ayia Napa, 5 kilometers from the homonymous village and close to the village Xilophagos.
Formed due to the influx of rainwater that flew to the sea, the river of Liopetri is a natural water strip, like Fjords, that enters the land creating a romantic aquatic landscape. Its length is 600 meters and width of up to 25 meters.
Today, although the entire site remains somewhat untapped, Liopetri River serves as a safe haven for fishing boats in the area and is used by both professionals and amateur fishermen, whose self-made huts surround the river. The past years, however, the inhabitants of the wider area used it to export their products to neighboring countries. In the 18th century it was indeed a port for iron and silk trade in Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere, while the rock in some places of the river testifies there were quarries in the area. Sometimes madder grows near the Liopetri river (the plant’s root contains red dye).
The unknown to many Liopetri beach with the small forest that surrounds it as well as the old chapel of St. Georgios Liopetriou are some beautiful attractions that the traveller can visit.
