Pouropetra Caves

The caves of pouropetra are a hidden natural attraction in the village Mammari of Nicossia province in Cyprus.

Many mines have been operating in the region for many years known as ‘ellinospilioi’. These deep sandstone caves produced sandstone for the construction of the local churches as well as for Nicosia’s construction needs. A cave named Vounaros was used by the Cypriot army for storage of explosives however the whole area is now protected as it is part of the Natura 2000 for the bats that live in these caves.
