Paphos Zoo

The Paphos Zoo is the largest of its kind in Cyprus and it is located 18 kilometers north of the homonymous city and 4 kilometers from Pegeia.

A scientifically designed space created by the passion of the owner Christos Christoforou on a green hill, the Zoo of Paphos is set in a natural environment of 100,000 square meters and hosts one of the largest private collections of exotic birds and poisonous snakes across Europe, surpassing a total of 1,000 species of flora from all over the world.

Some of them are quite rare and others well known like the zebras, the rare white kangaroos, lamas, squirrels, species of large and small monkeys, crocodiles, tropical birds, parrots, eagles, ostriches, camels, flamingos, gazelles, giraffes , lions, tigers and elephants. The animals are in specially designed cages, sorted by category with information signs and information on every one individually.

Also, the visitor of Paphos Zoo will see all kinds of parrots and about seventy species of snakes (poisonous or not) and a specially designed space with appropriate temperature and salt water which hosts three penguins from Chile. Moreover an animal that stands out is the second largest turtle in the world that weighs about 250 kilograms and comes from an island located in the Indian Ocean.

In the beautiful natural landscape and among the cages with animals there are small waterfalls, ponds and bridges, while among the landscaped gardens there is a playground, several relaxation areas and kiosks serving drinks and snacks. The restaurant serves a variety of delicacies by the Cypriot and Greek cuisine, while at the entrance of the park there is also a shop with souvenirs. The indoor amphitheater with a capacity of 400 people is the place where an impressive show starring macaw parrots and owls takes place three times a day. Other areas of the park are the “traditional home” that exhibits objects, tools and utensils of the old Cypriot household, exhibition of paintings with a rare birds theme, a small “Natural History Museum” with fossils and rock types and a small farm with domestic animals to encourage children to come in physical contact with them.

The tour in all areas of Paphos Zoo takes 1.5-2 hours, while there is also the option to tour around in small electric cars. The park occasionally organizes special educational programs for children on the environment and provides information about the wildlife and fauna, targeting both the protection and reproduction of the species with specific infrastructure available (equipped operating room and clinic). All areas are also accessible to people in a wheelchair and there is free parking outside the zoo.
