Pano Pyrgos Tillyrias
Pano Pyrgos Tillyrias is located in the Nicosia province and it is about 4 km from Kato Pyrgos Tyllirias, 85 km from the homonymous capital of Cyprus, 120 km from Limassol and Larnaca and 90 km from Paphos.
Being a remote enclave of Cyprus, Pano Pyrgos Tillyrias today is inhabited by few farmers coming from the main village of the area (Kato Pyrgos Tillyrias) to take care of their figs and to cut trees for the production of charcoal, a traditional occupation for which the settlement is undoubtedly known throughout the island.
In the wider area of Pano Pyrgos Tillyrias, there are still plenty of furnaces, although the times when the village exported up to three million charcoal sacks have gone and are not coming back. Built high up in the mountain, the village today is almost abandoned, but many visit it to see the temple of Panagia Galoktisti (meaning “built with milk”), which according to the tradition was constructed when all the villagers gave part of their milk production, in order to restore it.
