Municipal Library of Limassol

The Municipal Library of Limassol is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings, the mansion of Antonios Pilavakis, located in the heart of the homonymous city.

The building that was constructed in the early 20th century was purchased by the municipality to house the Municipal Library of Limassol, which opened its doors to the public in the early 1970s. Its operation had begun in October 1945 in a courtroom hall and in the early decades, its enrichment in books was based on systematic purchases and the donations of poets, writers, people of the spirit, but also ordinary citizens. However, its activity did not stop there, as it was also active in the publishing sector with the publication of poems by Vassilis Michaelides in 1960. Today the Municipal Library of Limassol is one of the largest in Cyprus, with more than 70,000 volumes of literary, scientific and other periodicals, scientific journals, a rich collection of children’s literature and much more. It is also remarkable for its Cypriot section, which includes rare Cypriot publications, old series of newspapers and magazines, as well as the Limassol magazine “Avgi”, which is preserved in a complete original series.

Serving school students, university students, as well as foreign visitors and permanent residents, the Municipal Library of Limassol is a vibrant cultural center of the city.
