Melamiou

Melamiou is a village in the province of Paphos in Cyprus and it is situated 26 kilometers northeast of the homonymous city, 77 kilometers northwest of Limassol and 132 kilometers southwest of Nicosia.

Built at an altitude of 400 meters deep in the valley of Ezousas river and very close to the Kannaviou Dam, which attracts many people for its splendid view, Melamiou is a very small uninhabited settlement that is essentially a passage on the way to the surrounding villages. The church of the community is dedicated to Panagia Eleousa, a modern stone-built basilica without a dome, with a bell tower standing separately from the rest of the church.

At the exit of the village and some 1.5 kilometers from it, there is the local winery, which is part of the community of Kannaviou, a modern unit that produces selected wines from family vineyards. These wines have been awarded at local and international competitions, while accompanying European leaders’ dinners when Cyprus held the presidency of the EU. Here, the visitor can taste native varieties (white dry “Ayios Chrysostomos”, Maratheftiko, Cabernet Sauvignon, rosé "Eros"). Very close and to the east of Melamiou are situated the famous Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery (8.5 km) and the Holy Monastery of Paphos (9.5 km), two of the most important monasteries in the province. Chrysorrogiatissa is a magnificent building complex that was founded in the 12th century and is a place of pilgrimage for many local and foreign visitors (mainly from Russia), who come here in the thousands every year in order to see the miraculous icon. The Holy Monastery is also one of the most ancient religious sites, since it was built in 300 AD. on the ruins of an ancient Greek temple of the king of Paphos Nicocles (374 / 373-361 BC), which was dedicated to Hera.

Melamiou is very close to Psathi (4.5km), Agios Dimitrianos (2.5km), Kannaviou (2km), Lapithiou (5.5km) and Stato-Agios Fotios.
