Mathikoloni

Mathikoloni is a village in the Limassol district and is situated 20 km north from Limassol, 84 km west of Larnaca, 79 km southwest of Nicosia and 89 km east of Paphos.

Built on a hillside, Mathikoloni is an abandoned village with a restored chapel and offers visitors a tour of the past glories of the settlement that was abandoned due to an earthquake. Many people also visit the village for its unique landscape that offers great spots for photography.

The villagers moved to the current location of the village, building a new settlement, while some moved to Limassol.

At the exit of Mathikoloni towards Limassol, there is a small park where the visitors can rest after the walk around the streets of the village. In the park there is a fountain with drinking water, a stone mill, a small playground and the monument of Michalakis Michail, who died during the Turkish invasion of 1974. Near the park you can also find the church of Agios Georgios (St. George), a vaulted basilica built in 1983.

Mathikoloni, located near Spitali and Fasoula, became known in the 1980s thanks to the BBC television series The Aphrodite Inheritance, that was shot in this particular village.
