Love Bridge
The Love Bridge (Gefyra ton erotevmenon) is located in the Mavrokoronas area of Cyprus, right next to the Monachus Monachus Bridge, and east of Ayia Napa towards the Cavo Greco Cape.
Overlooking the endless blue of the sea that eventually becomes one with the sky, the Love Bridge was inaugurated on the Valentine’s Day in 2014, and since then it has been the main cultural attraction of the Famagusta region for those who want to “lock” their love by throwing the key in the sea that is a few meters below the arch. In fact, a torrent flows through the site, from which fresh water was spilled into the sea in the past.
The story of the worldwide love bridges begins in Serbia before the Second World War when a local fell in love with an officer and made an appointment each time on a particular bridge until the war broke them apart. Since then, there is a custom that girls have to write their name and their loved one’s name on a padlock and hang it from a bridge in order to “lock” their love forever. So, the myth endured the passage of time, with the result that the everlasting promises of countless couples that have passed through the island of Aphrodite are hanging today on the Love Bridge. Tones of Love are hanging on the Love Bridge, padlocks that have become a symbol of everlasting loyalty or of some promise. The only sure thing, of course, is that by walking the bridge of lovers the visitor encounters many love stories.
The Love Bridge is easily accessible, also for the disabled, with the exception of some parts of the corridor that are more hard to access.
