Kyperounta

Kyperounta is a village in the Limassol district of Cyprus and is about 40 km north from Limassol, 60 km from Nicosia, almost 100 km from Larnaca and some 90 km from Paphos.

Being the main and largest village of the geographical region of Pitsilia, Kyperounta is built at the foot of the range Troodos and Madari mountain at an altitude of about 1200 meters. It is thus considered not only the third highest village in Cyprus after the Prodromos and Handria villages, but also the most populous in the mountains of the famous mountain range.

The name of the settlement comes from the homonymous purple plant (kyperi – nut grass) that grows in the region, while the history of Kyperounta dates back to the Byzantine years. Under the Frankish rule this village probably was one of the many royal lands of the island.

Kyperounta is famous for its climate throughout the Middle East, since it has no humidity. So there grows almost half the apples and pears production of the whole island and it is the “wine crossroad”, as the model winery of the village has gotten dozens of awards in international and local competitions. Indeed, because of the excellent climate, the village was chosen in the past by the English as the most suitable location for a sanatorium, at the same spot where now is situated the modern hospital and the chapel of Agios Kendeas (St. Kendeas) (which can be found in the courtyard of the hospital).

The central part of this large village begins at an old traditional neighborhood, with traditional houses and their characteristic narrow streets, almost all made out of stone. Your tour of the neighborhood will result in a large square. In this central point of Kyperounta the visitor will find many interesting cultural attractions, as well as three museums. The Museum of Traditional Rural Life and Natural History, the Museum of Folk Traditions and the Museum of Struggle of Kyperounta, which can be visited after booking an appointment with the Community Council. Moreover, there is also the site of the Byzantine church-museum of Kyperounta with sacred objects and icons of the 13th up to the 20th century, which is located in the ancient chapel of the Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) of Kyperounta.

In the square, you can also visit the stone church of Agia Marina (Saint Marina) Kyperountas, grandly celebrated on the 17 th of July, while relatively close you will also find the churches of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and Panagia Chrysosotiros. Southwest of the village is the Community stadium of Kyperounta, which is literally built into the mountain, and above the settlement stands out the five-aisled basilica of Agios Arsenios (St. Arsenios) of Kyperounta (which is built in the architectural style that prevailed in Cyprus during the 5th and 6th century AD), with incredible panoramic views all the way to Limassol.

One of the largest events in Kyperounta is the Apple Festival that is held every year in October, as well as on the eve of April the 1 st .

Kyperounta village is also indicated for nature lovers as the equestrian club of the village has donkeys and horses available for riding. Additionally, in the direction of the community stadium there is a circular nature trail, while for those seeking adventure, just outside the village operates a park that allows for climbing, and much more.

Finally, Kyperounta offers all necessary services such as banks, hospital, big market, kindergarten, elementary school, 4 restaurants where you can taste traditional Cypriot flavors, but also several cafes and fashionable bars, and here you can also find houses for rent for your holidays.
