The name of the village came from the word Konya, which is the name of the city of Iconium of Asia Minor, in which 4,000 Greeks dwelt. Probably the first inhabitants of the community were Greeks who arrived here from Asia Minor. A place with a tradition of mulberry cultivation, with the leaves of which silkworms are fed for silk production, Konia was previously also known for its terebinth trees, from the fruit of which oil was extracted, and the tar of Paphos used in dental fillings.

The main church of the community is dedicated to Saint Jacob and is a modern building of 1981, built at the same location as the old church that collapsed after the great earthquake that struck Paphos in 1953. The saint celebrates on the 23rd of October, and on this day his icon is processed through the streets of the community. Outside the temple, there is the Heroes' monument, devoted to the fallen inhabitants of the community. Close to the traditional drinking fountain of the village, the icon of Panagia Chrysokoniotissa was discovered, which is now decorated in an iconostasis.
