Karavopetres
Karavopetres are rocky formations encountered in the Akamas cape and located immediately after the Lara Beach in Paphos district of Cyprus.
Once upon a time Cyprus was the target of raiders who entered inland from the Akamas cape in order to loot and destroy. The western coastline of the Ineia village of Paphos is full of steep rocks that jump out of the sea. According to local myth these are the Karavopetres (ship rocks), the ships of Saracens that got petrified by Mary of Vlou in order to protect the local villages from raids.
Being one of the natural attractions of the island, these rocks in the sea form a unique landscape which is ideal for card postals and photographs and representative of the wild nature of the island. Several dirt roads through the imposing landscape lead to other interesting places like the Sea Caves of Pegeia where sea water violently gashes out creating water jets or the Avakas Gorge and the tall rocks of Ineia and Drousia. Finally the whole region is full of ruins of old churches which are deserted.
