Institution of Environmental Studies Kritou Terra
The Institution of Environmental Studies Kritou Terras is housed in the old renovated elementary school of the homonymous village and is one of the
many attractions within the settlement.
A permanently staffed with scientists and instructors center, the Institute of Environmental Studies Kritou Terra is the first of its kind in Cyprus and operates since 1995 with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, providing study programs of nature and highlighting the importance of Cypriot fauna and flora.
The premises have a classroom, library, laboratory (stereoscopic, furnaces, computers, oximeters etc) and dormitories for those who want to keep studying the island’s wildlife.
The slogan of the center is ‘there is no better classroom to learn about nature than being outdoors’ and in the same vain educational programs are organized outdoors designed to inform and train through a series of activities and field exercises, like hiking the Avakas gorge, the Akamas cape, ecology of the forest and water, the collection and processing of data, the preparation of studies and interventions in sustainability issues to the local authorities, the Parliament and the European Commission.
The Institute for Environmental Studies Kritou Terra which collaborates with the University of Cyprus for the environmental training of teachers, is open to students from all levels of education, teachers and many other scientists or not. From the launch of the operation, more than 56,000 people from Cyprus and several countries in the Middle East and Western Europe, have been trained at the center.
