House of Orpheus

The House of Orpheus is located in the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos, west of the House of Theseus and was excavated by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.

Another luxury building belonging to the same type of Hellenistic house as the House of Dionysus, the House of Orpheus dates back to the end of the 2nd and early 3rd centuries AD and probably belonged to a Roman commander or a very wealthy resident of Paphos.

The house is organized around a peristyle atrium and some floors are covered with impressive and significant mosaics depicting mythological scenes, with the most significant and larger mosaic representing Orpheus playing music on his lyre among wild beasts, hence the name of the house. In fact, on this mosaic there is an inscription stating the name of the artist.

Others of the famous Paphos mosaics found in the House of Orpheus depict the battle of Hercules with the Nemea Lion and a militant Amazon with her horse.
