Drimou

Drimou is a village in the province of Paphos in Cyprus and it is situated 26 kilometers northeast of the homonymous town, 89 kilometers northwest of Limassol and 152 kilometers southwest of Nicosia.

Located at an altitude of 500 meters and surrounded by wild vegetation and grain crops, olive trees, vineyards and almond trees, Drimou with the approximately 100 residents, impresses those who come here seeking the wonderful climate without humidity and the tranquility that the natural landscape exudes. The view of the Troodos mountains on the one hand and the sea on the other, as well as the quiet neighborhoods surrounded by houses of traditional folk architecture make Drimou an ideal destination for a different coffee experience in the two traditional cafes of the village, away from its intense rhythms of the cities.

The name of the settlement is associated with the ancient word “drymos”, meaning in Greek a place with many oaks (oak trees), which indicates the abundance of these trees in the area.

The main church of the village, Metamorphosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration of the Savior), is a Gothic-style building that is located in the center of the community and was built in the early 19th century, while the bell tower is an addition built in the 1930s when the temple was extended. The religious points of interest in the area are completed by the chapel of St. George, the chapel of Archangel Michael and the chapel of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Faneromeni.

Other remarkable sights in the village of Drimou are the homonymous 700-meter-long Nature Trail, as well as the Monument to the Fallen near the building of the community council, consisting of the bronze busts of the heroes Stelios Chr. Savidis, Ioannis S. Aristodimou, Andreas K. Alkiviadis and the missing Menelaos S. Menelau. The bronze busts, lined with stone, were donated by the emblematic Kykkos Monastery.

Many years ago, the residents of the community built a reservoir for collecting water flowing from the Troodos Mountains. This tank was vital to the locals, as it provided them with drinking water, with water for washing their clothes and drinking water for their animals. This reservoir remains there as a reminder of the past decades and the simple, traditional way of life in Drimou.
