Doros

Doros is a village of the district of Limassol in Cyprus and is located approximately 20 km northwest of Limassol and 80 kilometers from Larnaca, Paphos and Nicosia.

Almost hidden from view by the many vineyards surrounding it, Doros is one of 14 koumantarochoria (wine producing villages), and has 120 residents.

The name of the village Doros comes from the ancient Doric word “Doris”, which means “the inhabited by Dorians” or “wooded area”, and so probably the second version gave its name to this verdant village. Recent discoveries of ancient tombs, testify that the settlement had already been inhabited in 700 BC.

The unique layout of Doros with the arch at its core, and the few stone houses are the main attractions of the settlement, as well as, situated very close to the center of the village, the church of Agios Epiphanios (St. Epiphanius), which was built approximately in the 14th to 15th century, and within walking distance the newly built church of Panagia Galaktotrofousa, constitute all together the composition of images that are impressed upon every visitor. Next to the church of Galaktotrofousa, the visitor will find a small park as well as an old drinking fountain and a windmill.

Doros has a restaurant, a traditional cafe, a local confectionery factory, while here is also produced the famous commandaria (local desert wine) “Theodora”, and more specifically in the winery Karsera, to where one visit alone is a trip to the Middle Ages and the scents of a bygone era.
