Cyprus Library

The Cyprus Library is located in Nicosia and within walking distance of the Nicosian Town Hall.

With its roots in the creation of the public library in 1927 at the initiative of the British Government, the Cyprus Library operated under the control of the municipality until the 1950s. By law of 1968, it was under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Culture and after 1974, it returned to its original facilities at the D’Avila bastion. Finally, in its present form, it was founded with the Cyprus Library Law of 1987.

The classification of the books has been made on the basis of the Dewey decimal system and the thematic headings are the ones used by the National Library of Greece. One of the major services offered is the operation of the National Publishing Center and the provision of international ISBNs for books, ISSN for magazines and ISMN for scores, as well as the collection of UN publications. As the place of filing of UN publications, it offers a collection that can be exploited by all kinds of researchers.

With the registration of Cypriot publications in international catalogs based on international standards, it contributes to the publishing production of Cyprus and the worldwide information for Cypriot publishers and writers.

Finally, an important service offered by the Cyprus Library is the assembled material on Cyprus, which includes Cypriot publications and books on Cyprus that have been published abroad. The Information Department is located in other facilities, at Faneromeni Street.
