Center of Environmental Information Salamiou

The Center of Environmental Information Salamiou opened in 2010 and it is located in the homonymous village of Paphos province in Cyprus.

An area of the Ministry of Education and Culture, dedicated to the Cypriot flora, fauna and geomorphology of the island, the Environmental Education Center Salamiou is one of the last created and set in a restored 1930s building in the former primary school of the community.

It features a conference and projection room, an ecology lab, a creative activities hall and a library. The projection room shows films on the environment of the area, how Cyprus was created and the types of rocks found on the island.

The tour continues in the exhibit hall, which displays the different types of rocks in the region including igneous (lava) and sedimentary rocks (recrystallised limestones) from group Diarizos, pelagic sedimentary rocks (limestones, mudstones, quartz sandstones) from team St. Photios and finally metamorphic rocks (schists and marbles) from St. Barbara formation.

Salamiou belongs to the Mamonia Complex, a region of great geomorphological value, since it is a separate and complicated tectonic concentration of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, whose age ranges from Medium Triassic to the Upper Cretaceous (230-75 million years). These rocks are considered foreign compared to the overlying autochthonous carbonate rocks and ophiolitic rocks of Troodos and are only found in the southern part of Cyprus, especially in the southwestern part of Paphos.

The center also offers one-day programs on issues concerning environmental specificities and characteristics of the region, such as local cultures, cultural physiognomy of the village and there are also various events of ecological, cultural and historical interest, with the participation of the local community and residents from the region of Paphos.

The Centre for Environmental Education Salamiou, which is visited by foreign visitors, scientists and schools throughout the years, also gives information about the fauna of the area. Besides, the region is a passage for migratory birds traveling from Europe to Africa and vice versa during the spring and winter. It is considered an ideal location that works as a natural observatory for the study of Troodos from an ecological, geological and botanical standpoint.
