Avdimou
Avdimou is a village in the Limassol district of Cyprus and is situated 40 kilometers west of Limassol, 107 km west of Larnaca, 124 km southwest of Nicosia and 38 km southeast of Paphos.
A settlement of about 500 inhabitants, built at an altitude of 200 meters and near the sea, Avdimou is a settlement with a beautiful beach and a land where the main crops are vineyards for growing sultanas, wheat, legumes, vegetables, carob and citrus trees, while there are also livestock units. The southern part of the community belongs to the territory of the British bases, where several residents also work.
For the name of the region there are two versions, the first mentions Avdimonas, a Phoenician ruler who sought refuge in the area (after his expulsion by Evagoras A in 411 BC) giving the name to the settlement, while the second version indicates that the name came from the first settler named Eudemus.
The history of the village begins in the era of the Lusignans, when Avdimou was one of the 12 districts of Cyprus. During the Venetian rule it was an important center, being one of the three districts of Limassol and it did not lose its important role also during the Turkish rule and under the English domination.
In the modern history of the place, up until the Greek and Turkish Cypriots riots in 1964, the village was mixed and predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots, but then the few Greek Cypriots inhabitants abandoned the settlement. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, Turkish Cypriots were moved to the territories of the occupied Cyprus and to Avdimou arrived Greek Cypriot refugees from the occupied north of the island. Indeed, many houses in the village are uninhabited, signs of the recent past, as is also the community mosque, built on top of the east bank of the river Avdimou and among the western neighborhoods of the village.
Visitors of the community will find grocery stores, coffee shops, a beautiful and verdant community park and can enjoy the sea 4 kilometers south of the village, at the beautiful and sandy beach Avdimou which is quite popular among athletes of kite surfing.
In the area there are also self-settlements on government land, constituting an incentive for young families who want to move here.
The only church of the village is the modern church of the Metamorfosis tou Sotira (Transfiguration of the Savior).
