Agora

Agora (the Market) is located in the vast area of the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, in front of the Ancient Conservatory of Paphos and the lighthouse, and is one of the many monuments that the visitor can see in the area.

In the form of a square inner courtyard, measuring 95 x 95 meters, with a porch of columns, the Agora dates back to the middle of the 2nd century AD and it was the central square of the city that was encircled by galleries with granite columns and marble capitals of Corinthian rhythm, but without grooves.

The findings came to light from the archaeological mission of the University of Krakow and it used to be, essentially, the Roman Agora of the city, in a layer under which it is estimated that there is also the equivalent Agora of Paphos of the Hellenistic years.

From the yard with the four galleries, today only the foundations are preserved, but also the buildings occupying the western wing.

Among other findings in the area, one of rare archaeological value is a unique scale, a sword rare for Cyprus, and various amulets with symbols depicted on them, such as the crocodile which, according to experts, refers to the Nile River.
