Agios Dometios

Agios Dometios is situated about 6 kilometers west of the center of Nicosia in the homonymous province of Cyprus.

Being one of the modern suburbs of the capital of the island, Agios Dometios has been an independent municipality since 1986, and has also been twinned with the municipality of Agios Nikolaos in Crete, and the municipality of Korydallos in Attica. With a total area of 12 square kilometers, and an average altitude of about 160 meters, it is crossed by the tributaries of the Pedieou River, while most of the settlement is since 1974 under Turkish domination. Hence there, since 2003, is situated the homonymous road barrier linking the two sides of the island for the public and the locals.

The name of the settlement comes from the Saint Dometios the Persian, while the first reference to the settlement of Agios Dometios dates back to the Frankish rule, when it was part of a noble feudal land.

The two main churches of the settlement are the stone-built Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, which is relatively modern and located in the heart of the settlement, as well as the Franco Byzantine chapel of Agios Dometios (to the south of the settlement), which was the first temple which was ever built in the community. Other ecclesiastical monuments in Agios Dometios include the temples of Agios Pavlos (new and old basilica church).

Finally, there are many shops in Agios Dometios, three elementary schools and a high school, a library, as well as the horse-racing club, a large sports center, and various organized clubs.
