Troodos Botanical Garden
Troodos Botanical Garden ‘A.G.Leventis’ is set at an altitude of 1.400 metres above sea level, inside the limits of the Troodos National Forest Park, in the village Amiantos of Limassol province.
It is part of the Natura 2000 program, near the main road connecting Karvouna with Troodos and it was created in 2004 for the purpose of training on the flora of the area, conservation and protection of endangered species, and research on flora issues.
Of primary importance was the restoration of a significant part of the asbestos mine that seized to operate in 1988 however this was the opportunity to turn this into a 30 acres leisure park which is visited by locals and visitors alike in order to admire the rich flora. The name comes from the Anastasios Leventis Foundation which contributed over € 350,000 for this park.
Upon entering, after the parking, the visitor sees all the species which are divided into sections, many endemic plants of Troodos are in the central square of garden, trees, garden plants and herbs, agricultural plants, endangered and rare species, aspiring to reach the number of 500 different species in the next years of operation.
The riparian vegetation has been installed in the artificial brook and around the two lakes, which are connected with it. The water starts from the lake located at the highest point of the garden, falling from a waterfall and then poured into a large lake, where it gets recycled.
The pedestrian network with its narrow cobbled streets and signs, the view point with the telescope overlooking Pitisilia, benches, fountains, wooden bridges, two small lakes with water recycling and open-air activities, form a very beautiful scenery that attracts the attention of visitors and offers an environment for total relaxation.
Inside the building of the Troodos Botanical Garden there is a visitor center with a reception area, exhibit hall, video and lecture room, herbarium with samples of the Troodos plants as well as a small shop featuring books on the flora and a room for students.
The entrance to the Troodos Botanical Garden ‘A.G. Leventis’ is free. It is also a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and is one of the three botanical gardens that have been established by the Forest Department. The other two are located at Athalassa and the Baths of Aphrodite.
