Tower of Rigena in Akama
The Tower of Rigena in Akama is located at the top of the homonymous peninsula, Moutti tis Sotiras, and after the excursion area of the site “Smigies” in the province of Paphos. The Nature Trail of Adonis also crosses the area.
Being one of the lesser known cultural attractions of Cyprus, the Tower of Rigena in Akama seems to have originally functioned as a monastery, and according to mythology it was the place where the Rigena (Queen of Cyprus) and the Byzantine hero Digenis used to meet. The former colony of Akamantida and the present endless peninsula that took its name from the mythical hero and its founder, the son of Theseus, became a symbol of the expression and development of various legends, for example in the Middle Ages, when it was where the romance between Akama himself and the queen of that tower took place.
Round the ruins of the Tower of Rigena in Akama there is a 500-year-old oak tree, as well as the famous Aphrodite Baths with the homonymous botanical garden. Finally, at the foot of the mountain there are the churches of Agios Georgios Akama, Agios Konon Akama and the ruins of the Byzantine temple of Agios Epiphanios Akama.
