Sculpture Park Petreon
The Sculpture Park Petreon is one of the most memorable and unusual places for the visitor who will come to Mazotos in the Larnaca province.
A privately-owned outdoor space at the location of Plaka, which is both a museum and the home of its creator, the Sculpture Park Petreon includes magnificent sculptures made by the self-taught sculptor Savvas Koulandros with stones reaching up to 30 tones in weight, from various parts of Cyprus. In the context of creating this unique space, over 14,000 hours of work have been invested in the ever-growing collection of stone exhibits.
The themes of the works vary, as the visitor will see works from Greek mythology and tradition, but many of the creations are also interwoven with the contemporary history of Cyprus, such as the national hero of the island, Gregory Afxentiou.
The permanent exhibition includes sculptures such as the Sphinx, Europe, Erinies, and even a small stone-built chapel of Byzantine style. One of the most impressive works that dominates the museum is “Petreos”, a towering man of 8.5 meters made of stone, holding in his right hand an ancient Greek cloak and in his left hand a snake. Walking around the park and enjoying the magnificent monuments and a wide variety of cactuses surrounding the area, the owner undertakes the tour and presents detailed information about the exhibits and their way of construction to the viewer.
In addition to the open air spaces, the Sculpture Park Petreon features the Liasidio Amphitheater that hosts poetry evenings in the summer, and Archontariki where painting exhibitions are hosted and not only.
