Municipal Market of Limassol
The Municipal Market of Limassol known also as Grocery Store is the closed market of the city and is located in the heart of the historical center of Limassol in the homonymous province of Cyprus.
In 1918, with the design of the architect Zacharia Voda and during the term of the mayor Spyros Araouzou, the 3,000 square meter stone building of British architecture of the Municipal Market of Limassol is being built. Subsequently the building expanded and underwent some additions until 1948, when it finally took its present shape. Its arched gates hosted a crowd of people who shopped in its various rooms, such as groceries, butchers, fish shops, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, and more, becoming the center of commercial and social activities by the end of the decade of the ’70s. For many years, the scenic Saripolou Square, in front of which the market was found, was abandoned, but it was recently rebuilt, attracting once again locals and tourists.
The new structure of the Municipal Market of Limassol, apart from traditional vendors, also includes a traditional café and a cookery. Also in its gallery, but also outside it, are organized various musical-theatrical performances, while the space is generally used for the events of the city’s youth center.
