Ancient Odeon of Paphos
The Ancient Odeon of Paphos is one of the cultural attractions within the enormous Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos, located in the heart of the tourist area and one of the most important monuments in the park.
A building that has been excavated on a rock and was discovered by the Department of Antiquities in 1973, the Ancient Odeon of Paphos is located in front of the lighthouse and within walking distance from the House of Dionysus, while close to it are also the ruins of the walls of the ancient city, the Agora and the Asklepeio of Paphos.
At the time it was built, it was in the center of the city, specifically in the north, and it was part of the complex of the Agora buildings. Its date of construction goes back to the Hellenistic period, but its present form was acquired in the 2nd century AD during the period of Roman domination. Built exclusively from well-hewed pieces of limestone, its shape is semi-circular and rests on a retaining wall, consisting of the amphitheatre, the orchestra, the two lateral lanes surrounding the stage and the stage, with a diameter of 11 meters, from which a part of the proscenium and the cobblestone floor are preserved to this day. Climbing the stairs, the visitor, apart from the panoramic view of the vast space, will also have a view of the large square, Agora, in front and around the Odeon, which at that time was decorated with columns of granite and Corinthian capitals, parts of which are still preserved.
The Ancient Odeon of Paphos has been restored by the Department of Antiquities, and here take place many artistic events, concerts and theatrical performances such as the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama of Cyprus during the summer months.
