Nikitari

Nikitari is a village in the Nicosia province and it is situated about 50 kilometers southwest of the homonymous capital of Cyprus, 70 kilometers from Limassol, 90 kilometers from Larnaca and 110 kilometers from Paphos.

The cultivated lands coexist with vast areas of wild vegetation, creating an unsurpassed image for every visitor to Nikitari. Indeed, a large part of the village is covered by the state forest Adelfoi, where one can also get a glimpse of the rich fauna of the Cypriot countryside.

In the area where Nikitari is now located, used to be Asini, an ancient settlement of the colonists of the homonymous region in the Peloponnese, a name that today is connected with the famous church of the area. Under the Frankish rule, it was a feudal estate of the royal Marathasa, while tradition, on the other hand, links the history of the village with Agios Nikitas, the Bishop of Chitron.

At the entrance of the settlement there is the monument for the victims from 1945 to 1974. The stone church of Panagia Ferviotissa, a cultural treasure of the 12th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best known as Panagia Asinou, is a reference point for whoever will visit Nikitari. Walking around the settlement, one can admire the houses of folk architecture and the imposing church of Ioannis o Prodromos (John the Baptist), while at the western end of the village, the main church of the community, Apostolos Andreas, can also be seen.

In Nikitari, although there is no tourist accommodation, the visitor can taste local delicacies in the village tavern, as well as tour the parks of the area and other recreation areas, while at the same time enjoying the natural beauty of the village and the clear waters of the dam by walking along the Nature Trail of Panagia Asinou – Agios Theodoros.
