Korfi
Korfi is a village located northwest of Limassol in the homonymous province of Cyprus and 14 kilometers from the capital, nearly 80 km from Paphos, about 70 km from Larnaca, and less than 100 km away from Nicosia.
Korfi is a small settlement founded during the Ottoman rule of the island and got its name because it is built on top of a mountain (korfi means peak in Greek), overlooking Limassol and Akrotiri Lemesou.
Τhe village Korfi was originally built in the depth of the valley formed by three rivers, Limnatis, Kouris and Garyllis, on a steep slope. In the past the village was divided into two settlements, the Pano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Korfi. In 1969, after a large landslide caused by the rain, the villagers moved about two kilometers away, building their homes at an altitude of more than 500 meters. Today, the old village attracts admirers of the traditional Cypriot architecture, and there are plenty of visitors who, with the occasion of their visit to the village, also visit the old settlement in order to see the houses that were built with stone which residents quarried themselves from the surrounding mountains.
From the cultural attractions of Korfi stand out the two churches of the community, one in the old abandoned settlement and on in the new with the strange form, and they are dedicated both to the Panagia (Virgin Mary) Chrysokorfitissa, as well as the many newly built parks and the Hero monument dedicated to Christakis Minas.
Today in the community of Korfi there are some football fields, an estate – olive oil mill – workshop of traditional products, the central café of the community that belongs to the National Association of the village, and a mini-market, while more dining and accommodation options the visitor will find in the more touristic Platres.
The 150 residents of Korfi mainly engage in viticulture, and also because of the proximity of the village to the Limassol city, many commute to the capital, while slowly, more and more young couples seem to move to the settlement.
Finally, in Korfi, the members of the community council of the village organize various cultural events throughout the year.
