In Agios Tychonas the remains from the ancient Greek, Byzantine and medieval period of the island have been discovered. Most important of all is the ancient city kingdom of Amathus, on the beach front, which according to the legend was where Theseus came after his battle with the Minotaur and where he brought Ariadne who got pregnant, and after she gave birth to her child, died and was buried there. Another tradition mentions that Amathus was founded by Kinyras, king of Paphos and the first inhabitant of the city was a son of Hercules. The excavations at the archaeological site of Amathous began in 1980 and have unearthed the acropolis, the Temple of Venus, the Roman market complex and the baths, the harbor, the walls, the palace and the royal necropolis. One of the most important findings is the limestone jar from the 6th century BC located at the Louvre Museum in Paris and which is believed to be one of the two that were placed at the entrance of the temple.
Along the Agios Tychonas beaches you will find facilities for water sports, such as water skiing, sailing, parachuting, canoeing, speedboats, while at the port of ancient Amathous operates a diving school for the learning and studying of more than hundred fish species of the region, as well as the exploration of the ancient port of Amathous at the bottom of the sea.
In the village there used to be a church dedicated to Agios Tychonas (St. Tikhon) and in the ruins of this church is the tomb of Agios Ioannis o Eleimon (St. John the Merciful), who was born here in the 5th century.
