Shipwreck Liberty
The shipwreck Liberty is a diving destination in Paralimni of Famagusta province while it is also very close to shipwreck Nemesis III (150 meters away).
The ship was intentionally sunk by the municipality in order to create an artificial reef. The shipwreck Liberty is 650 meters away from the shore, 28 meters below sea level while the visibility is up to 35 meters. For the convenience of divers there is a tied buoy to mark the area and the underwater tour takes place inside and around the ship.
Liberty was a cargo ship 37 meters long and 7 meters wide which was constructed in Greece in 1965. Its first name was Skopelitis which was changed much later. After it was impounded in the 2000s from the coastguard it was bought by the municipality of Paralimni in order to sink it enrichment of Cypriot seas and promotion of diving tourism in the island. However the ship was sunk in the port of Limassol in 2009 due to a heavy storm and it was mauled to the beach of Protaras. On 22 May of 2009 Liberty was sunk in the Famagusta seabed.
Access to shipwreck Liberty is by boat from the port of Agios Nicholaos or the port of Agia Triada in just ten minutes. The area has a reach marine life while dolphins also like to visit it.
